The Cathedral With Golden Dome

The St.Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is the name of a church or it’s a Bulgarian Orthodox cathedral in Sofia...Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria. This particular church was built in Neo-Byzantine style and it will serve as Patriarch of Bulgaria. It has a gold plated bid dome of 45mts high and the bell tower reaching 53mts.The church contains 12 bells and the total weight is 23tons.The weight of the heaviest bell is 12 tons and the lightest among all is 10kgs.Italian marble with different colours is been used to decorate the interior.


The specality of this church is, it one of the largest Eastern Orthodox Cathedrals in the world and it also acts as the symbol for the city for attracting the tourists. In Sofia, St.Alexander Nevsky Cathedral occupies an area about 3,170 sq mts which can nearly hold 10,000 people inside. It is the 2nd biggest cathedral which is located on the Balkan Peninsula.

Since Bulgaria and Russia belongs to opposite alliances the name of the church was changed to the Sts. Cyril and Methodius Cathedral between 1916 and 1920, without avoiding the initial name. The church was been awarded a monument of culture on 12 September 1924.
