The St.Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is the name of a church or it’s a Bulgarian Orthodox cathedral in Sofia...Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria. This particular church was built in Neo-Byzantine style and it will serve as Patriarch of Bulgaria. It has a gold plated bid dome of 45mts high and the bell tower reaching 53mts.The church contains 12 bells and the total weight is 23tons.The weight of the heaviest bell is 12 tons and the lightest among all is 10kgs.Italian marble with different colours is been used to decorate the interior.

1)BELOGRADCHIK FORTRESS:

The Belogradchik Fortress is one of the best-preserved strongholds in Bulgaria. The initial fortress was constructed during the time when the region was part of the Roman Empire. The rock formations in the area served as a natural protection, as fortified walls were practically only built from the northwest and southeast, with the yard being surrounded by rocks up to 70 m high from the other sides. Initially, the Belogradchik Fortress served for surveillance and not strictly defense. Bulgarian tsar of Vidin, Ivan Stratsimir, extended the old fortress in the 14th century and it became one of the most important strongholds in the region.

During the Ottoman conquest of Bulgaria, the fortress was captured by the Ottomans in 1396. Considerable changes to the fortress – expansion and reorganization typical for the Ottoman castle architecture of the period – were made in the early 19th century. European elements were also added to the Belogradchik Fortress owing to the French and Italian engineers that participated in the expansion.

2)BOYANA CHURCH:

Located at the foot of the Vitosha Mountain in the Sofia suburb of Boyana, this medieval church carefully protects its precious treasure its 750 years-old frescoes. Even today, more than seven centuries later, these murals still stun visitors with their beauty, expressiveness and life-like expressions. Along with the figures of saints and martyrs, the artist, zograph Vassilii, has painted the figures of the church patrons – Kaloyan and Dessislava, and of the royal couple – King Constantine and Queen Irina. These genuine masterpieces of 13th century painting, created 200 years before the European Renaissance, denote a remarkable peak in Eastern Christian Art.

Driving from Varna to Vratsa

For those of you who have considered travelling from the city of Varna, on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast to the city of Vratsa in the northwest of Bulgaria, be prepared for a very pleasurable experience. Passing through the most beautiful and varied countryside made a lasting impression on my son and I. We undertook the trip in late March and whilst the weather was not too kind to us, rather cold and misty, it no way distracted from this memorable journey. The reason for making the drive was to visit for the first time a property that had been purchased via the internet. The price and photographs made the purchase irresistable and whilst 'buying unseen' is not to be recommended, we held high hopes as we set out, early on a Saturday morning.

Leaving our digs at 0700hrs we soon cleared the city limits and enjoyed a fast, easy drive on the new high motorway that eventually will join Varna to the capital city of Sofia. Presently the motorway extends for about eighty kilometres to the outskirts of Shoumen. This leg of the journey passed through vast rolling plains, dotted with numerous villages.

Coming to the end of the highway, we joined the E772 and passed the major towns of Shoumen, Targovishte and Veliko Tarnovo. Running parallel to the south of us we caught glimpses of the Stara Planina mountain range, which extends the width of Bulgaria dividing north from south. The snow capped peaks in the far distance were magnificant.
